Coach Development

An increasing number of National Governing Bodies of Sport are starting to address disability within their development programmes. One of the most effective ways of doing this is through coach development.

For example, an individual with a visual impairment may want to play cricket but the coach, who may be very set in their ways of coaching, may struggle to include the individual. This situation can arise due to the coach's lack of confidence or ability to adapt the session to include the newcomer.

The English Cricket Board (ECB) have, within their programme, a Coaching Disabled Cricketers Course, running alongside existing qualifications. This course provides the necessary adaptation of the sport information to suit the athlete. The Football Association (FA) and All England Netball (AEN) run very similar courses.

Examples, and information, of adapted versions of particular sports are Zone Hockey (England Hockey - EH) and Wheelchair Basketball (Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association - GBWBA) and details can be found on their websites.

Sports Coach UK (scUK) run their own generic courses on adapting sports to suit the ability of the athlete.
They are: - Coaching Disabled Performers - How to Coach Disabled People in Sport

These courses are regularly running within the Partnership. These courses are free to Partnership coaches but a small charge will need to be paid by others.
