Disability Sport England

Disability Sport England is a pan-disability organisation that provides opportunities to participate in sport for people with a disability.

With an annual regional and national programme of Championships we have developed into the premier National Events Agency with a strong membership

Disability Sport England celebrated its 40th Birthday in 2001 and our work is still going as strong as ever.

The charity has advanced considerably since 1961- when
Sir Professor Ludwig Guttmann founded the organisation (then the British Sports Association for the Disabled), allowing disabled people to participate in competitive sport.

The initial ideas have expanded and 40 years on have grown into something special, transforming perceptions of disability sport.

With a name and logo change in 1997, Disability Sport England focuses on events and membership. We can now boast that we are the
NUMBER ONE EVENTS AGENCY, respected worldwide for being a talent developing, thriving, and encouraging organisation.

Creating sporting champions…

The organisation provides an annual calendar of 12 National Championships and over 200 regional events. Through our junior and senior programmes we have assisted thousands of disabled people to develop their sporting prowess to become regional, national, international and in some case - Paralympic champions.

Our events help to encourage, develop and support competitors, enabling them to participate to a high level in this country. These events assist disabled sports people to reach standards, which are set for entry into international competition - like the Paralympic's.

The success of the British Paralympic team in Sydney has shown everyone the level of excellence in British disabled sport. We have even noted the increase of interest since the Games by the amount of calls we have received from disabled people keen to just “have a go”.
